Ado Chale coffee table (attributed), sculptural metallic, aluminium & iron, 1960`s ca, Belgium. This table could be by
Raf Verjans of Belgium as it has many features of his designs.
This 1960`s coffee table consists of metallic mosaic top set in a rectangular iron frame.
The aluminum mosaic is set in black which adds to the
infused & released contours. This texture is characteristic of Brutalist pieces characteristic of Ado Chale although this table is not signed. The four
iron spindle legs
finish with solid brass balls. Very good condition with some age patina adding character.
Ado Chale was born in Brussels in 1928, son of a cabinetmaker. Initially a blacksmith, Chale unexpectedly fell in love with a small mineralogy shop during a trip to Frankfurt in the 1950’s. He returned to Brussels to open his own mineral shop with his wife, a gemologist, in 1966. It was here where Chale gradually introduced his mosaic sculptures & furniture.
Chale’s pieces have been popular with European Royalty & presidents. The King & Queen of Belgium give furniture by Chale as official gifts including a piece for the wedding of the Prince of Wales & Diana Spencer. In Chale`s table design for Christian Dior, he playfully inlaid ‘mother-of-pearl buttons’. Chale’s pieces are as unique as the specimens used and his furniture designs are elegant & beautifully proportioned. Several of which have been displayed in the World Exhibition in Montreal, Musée des Beaux Arts in Nancy & Musée Galliera in Paris. In June 2012, an Ado Chale table sold for $110,220; a world record for one of his pieces.
