The design focus of the lamp is a quality cast figure depicting
an ancient Greek horse
rearing
over a glass ball.
Art Deco references are present in the exotic design, such as the Neoclassical horse theme, the circus theme of the ball, the curvy geometric pattern of the horse mane & tail.
The horse figure is made in solid patinated spelter with a warm antique bronze gilt finish.
It has a good weight. Underneath there is a painted geometric detail depicting the dust cloud in a moss tone.
The removable globe shaped glass shade is the original vintage to the piece, in a light blue tone with concentric gilt lines. The outside surface is gloss but it is frosted on the inside to diffuse the light. It
is held securely in place with 2 metal spring action flat arms attached to the round gilt metal lamp shade holder.
Inside the shade there is a new brass porcelain lamp holder. Ca
rries 1 standard small screw light bulb (E14) up to 40 Watts. At present fitted & photographed with a Pygmy Clear shaped light bulb of 15 Watts, which is included in the price. It could take other lightbulb shapes like Golf.
The rectangular base under the horse sculpture is in solid polished veined marble, in tones of terracotta, grey & white, with an elegant angled plinth around. New black felt is present underneath the base to protect the surface below.
This vintage lamp is in very good condition for its age. The metal sculpture is sound with a warm patina and minor rubbing to the gilt & paint. The marble base & glass shade are both in very good condition with no chips or cracks, and only some patina in line with age & wear.

THE HORSE THEME IN ART DECO & MYTHOLOGY
In early 20th Century French artists drew inspiration from distant lands. “Art Deco” was a new wave in visual art that first appeared in France shortly after World War I. The style was influenced by ideas and exotic imagery borrowed from Africa and Asia, but also from the Greek Revival style of the 19th Century.
Horses were revered in ancient Greece as symbols of wealth, power, and status. On pottery vases, in sculpture, and in other media, Greek artists depicted horses, chariot and horseback races, scenes of combat, and mythological horse -hybrids such as satyrs and the winged Pegasus.
