Art Deco style flush wall light, bronze & glass panels,1990`s ca, French
This wall light has been gently cleaned while respecting the vintage patina. It is newly rewired & earthed, fully working, PAT tested by an electrician and ready to install. It has a new brass lamp holder. Light bulb is included. This light can be use with a dimmer. It is possible to use this light in other countries although it may be necessary to purchase a different light bulb suitable to local electricity.
This Art Deco style vintage sconce is timeless with its elegant geometric sculptural form, making a decorative statement with its large proportions. It works well as a focal sculptural point in an entry hall, staircase or any room. It would make a great addition to a range of interiors such as Art Deco, Traditional, Mid-century, Hollywood Regency, Industrial, Minimalist & Contemporary.
The design focus of the sconce is clean & simple: a stepped profile surrounding the source of light. Art Deco references are present in the straight linear lines, geometric stepped grooves, clean edges & the use of alternating glass & metal surfaces.
The rectangular frame is made in solid patinated bronze and has a good weight. It screws vertically on the wall by 4 holes present at each corner of the back plate.
The frame has two stepped levels, both combining clear frosted glass with the geometric lines of the bronze frame.
Subtle Art Deco influences are present such the two diagonal metal lines connecting both portions of the frame, a postmodern take on the classic sunburst pattern.
The front rectangular glass panel slides upwards to reach inside the compartment & easily change the light bulb. It has an elegant bronze handle/top portion to conceal it while closed, which matches the frame design.
Inside the frame there is a new brass lamp holder. Carries 1 standard small screw light bulb (E14) up to 60 Watts. At present fitted & photographed with a Candle clear shaped light bulb of 28 Watts, which is included in the price. It could also take other types of E14 lightbulbs.
This vintage sconce is in very good condition for its age. The metal frame is sound with a warm age patina and minor wear in tiny places in line with age. All the glass surfaces are in very good condition with no chips or cracks, and only a few tiny nibbles around the trim of the removable glass panel, unseeable when closed, in line with age & wear.
Packing is offered free of charge. We take special professional care while packing. The sconce would be wrapped in bubble wrap, foam and an outer layer of card. It will be fitted into a box with loose fill packing nuts, safe for posting with a courier. We ship with reliable couriers (signed for, tracked & insured).
POSTMODERN ART DECO REVIVAL HISTORY
In early 20th Century French artists drew inspiration from distant lands. “Art Deco” was a new wave in visual art that first appeared in France shortly after World War I. The style was influenced by ideas and exotic imagery borrowed from Africa and Asia, but also from the Greek Revival style of the 19th Century. Art Deco embraced the new, epitomising optimism & celebration.
The period between the 1980`s & 1990`s was another period of wealth in America & Europe, and Art Deco reemerged as a popular design style. There was a love for gold and luxurious (or at least luxurious-looking) materials, as well as the reinterpretation of Art Deco patterns. This revival had started actually earlier, during the late 1960`s & 1970`s. The film industry released a number of stylish period films, such as Bonnie & Clyde (1967) and The Great Gatsby (1974). Fashion designers like Barbara Hulanicki of Biba in the UK mined Jazz Age silhouettes. Amid this nostalgic climate, antiques dealers & decorators found audiences hungry for Deco décor, notably celebrities like Yves Saint Laurent and Elton John.
