Arthur Simpson of Kendal (attributed) Arts & Crafts window seat stool, woven leather seat on an oak frame, 1900`s ca, English.

This antique window stool has been gently cleaned while respecting the aged patina. It is ready to use.

Made in England in the Arts & Crafts style (1890-1920), this rare piece has many of the design features of Arthur Simpson, the attributed designer. For example it has the fluid curved design, present in his Arts & crafts furniture & wood trays. It also has the webbed leather detail similar to his patented `Easy Stools`. Typically Simpson pieces would have a paper label stamped `Arthur W Simpson The Handicrafts, Kendall`, in this example a paper label could have gone missing.

The curved elongated form & elegant proportions make this piece well sized for a corridor, under a window, or as a footstool. It would suit a range of interiors such as Antique, Arts & Crafts, Traditional or Contemporary.

The seat portion is rectangular with the original interwoven leather straps held in place by copper studs bilaterally. On top sits the original buttoned cushion in velvet both sides.

The frame has solid oak square baluster legs, each tapering to a cabriole square foot. The legs are joined by stretchers for strength & stability. Under the legs there are the original round metal stoppers, these are covered with new black felt pads to protect the floor.

This antique piece is in very good condition for its age. The antique patina on the wood & leather has been preserved. The wooden frame joints are sound, with a warm antique patina & minor marks. The leather straps are all the original and in good condition, with some wear but no loses. The velvet upholstery is in good condition with minor marks. The original upholstery bands under the seat are in good condition, all in line with age & wear.

Additional dimensions:

The height of the seat is: 31 cm.

Packing is offered free of charge. We take special professional care while packing. For safe transport the frame & cushion would be wrapped separately in bubble wrap & foam. THE SIMPSONS OF KENDAL FURNITURE HISTORY

The Arts & Crafts Lakes School was a development of the Arts and Craft Cotswold School. Important designers included Arthur Simpson, in Kendal, Stanley Webb Davies at Windermere, and the Keswick School of Industrial Arts. The Lakes School maintained the design ideals with its simple lines, attention to detail, the use of local materials and traditional techniques. The dominant material was English oak. Typical decorative details included leather, exposed joints & delicate carved details.

Arthur W. Simpson (1857-1922) & Hubert Simpson (1889-1975) were active between 1885-1952. Their Kendal based furniture making company `The Handicrafts` opened in Windermere in 1901. It was a renowned Arts & Crafts maker associated with high quality hand crafted furniture, who worked with members of the Artworker`s Guild, such as Voysey and Baillie-Scott. In later years the style moved towards the English Art Deco & utilitarian furniture during the Wars.
