The monkey theme in Novelty Items - History
The monkey theme has a particularly humorous history. During the 19th and 20th Centuries, small brass monkeys were often collected as tourist & exotic souvenirs from China and Japan. Most often they are found with their hands covering their eyes, ears or mouth. On some occasions the monkey is covering the genitals as in this rare example. Novelty items are highly collected and very much in fashion today with the trend for Victoriana & eccentricities combined with Industrial in Interiors.
