This 1970`s sculptural coffee table with its stylised seals is a unique example of the return to earlier Art Deco styles. Animal themes first appeared in French furniture of the Art Deco period and again in the 1970`s. The elegant materials & proportions work well with the playful seal sculptures.
Two quality cast solid brass seals in stylised form, typical of
Frederick Cooper,
suspend a sheet of glass, all set on a black lacquered wood plinth. The brass seals appear to balance a ball through which there is a gold gilt arched metal bar with suction stoppers holding in place the removable glass top. The clear glass top of 1.2 cm with an emerald tone is the original vintage one adding depth and glamour to the design.
This coffee table is in very good condition and has been thoroughly cleaned. The original vintage glass top is in excellent condition. The solid brass seals are also in excellent condition, with a light age related patina which gives character. The black gloss lacquered wooden base is the original and in very good condition with no damages and only a few surface marks in line with age.
The base has the following dimensions: Width: 94.5 cm and Depth: 35 cm.
The thickness of the glass is: 1.2 cm.
