Chiavari brass chair with high back 1950`s ca, Italy.

This vintage chair has been thoroughly cleaned respecting the original aged patina and is ready to use.

This elegant vintage Chiavari chair is in solid brass. It is particularly unique & decorative with its high back standing out from most brass chairs of similar design which are usually smaller. This Neoclassical design could fit any decor, from traditional to contemporary, and it has its own presence allowing it to stand alone in a room.

The brass frame has a significant weight and detail both of which are signs of quality typical of Italian craftsmanship. The front spindle legs have a balustrade form finishing at the bottom to a point & pod typical of the period. The back legs run continuously upward to make the `stile` of the chair insuring strength. The back stiles & internal spindles also have the balustrade form. These join together at the top in a scalloped pattern, all of solid brass.

The vintage silk upholstery is in good condition with some rubbing in line with age. The seat is easily removable by unscrewing the 4 screws from the frame making this chair ideal and easy for re-upholstering.

Each leg has at the bottom the original plastic stopper to protect the floor.

The solid quality brass frame is strong and in very good structural form. Over time the brass has developed a warm antique patina which gives character. The frame could be easily re-polished but equally the aged patina is very attractive.

The height of the seat from the floor is: 52 cm.

Chiavari Chair History

Chiavari chairs are named for the Italian city where they originated. This little town in the north of Italy began producing these chairs at the beginning of the 19th Century. In 1807, Gaetano Descalzi designed a light, elegant, yet solid, cherry wood chair known as `Chiavarine`. The design was based on the Louis XV panel-back side chair however without the back upholstery. The chair eventually waltzed from the dining room to the ballroom. In 1953, the Kennedy’s used Chiavari chairs at their wedding, sealing the chair’s fate in history.
