Chinese reverse painted mirror, particularly large in the Chinoiserie style attributed to La Barge, 1980`s ca, American.
This vintage wall mirror has been thoroughly cleaned while respecting the vintage patina.
This decorative mirror is reverse painted reminiscent of the Chinese technique. Its large size and Chinoiserie style would make it an attractive addition to a range of interiors such as Antique, Traditional, Turn of the Century, Art Deco, Hollywood Regency or Contemporary.
Although reverse-glass painting originated in medieval Europe, it was in Asia where the technique flourished. The vibrant colours and absence of perspective made it well suited for Asian artists. Original antique Chinese reverse painted mirrors are hugely valuable for the craftsmanship and decorative impact.
In this composition, large roses, honeysuckle & daisies predominate while birds & over-sized butterflies flutter in the sky. Two people in traditional Chinese attire appear to look from a cliff at the flora & fauna. The painted scene in the foreground leaves the silver mirror in the background gently reflecting the environment.
The solid quality wood frame is slightly convex to the edge. It is painted satin black with a gilt scrolling in each corner.
The back is finished in wood & paper. There are two lateral metal plates with a metal cable to hang this mirror safely to the wall.
This vintage wall mirror is in excellent condition, there are no chips or cracks to the mirror surface. The wood frame is sound and in very good condition, with only a few minor marks & dents in line with age.
