Cocktail side table with a working compass top on a frame of brass & steel, 1950`s ca, French.

This 1950`s cocktail/coffee/side table has been thoroughly cleaned respecting the original antique patina and is ready to use.

This very decorative table is a characteristic 1950`s novelty item in which the design incorporated sporting items, in this case a compass which actually works. The solid brass "atom" shape legs are in line with the period`s interest in space age & futurism after a period of austerity.

Today this piece is not only valued for its past reference to the 1950`s but also as an early example of Industrial Decor which is in vogue today. The proportions of the table make it well suited for between a pair of chairs, or as a bedside table.

At the focal point there is the working compass. The compass star is in the centre and has the cardinal points and the abbreviations for the French directions. The working needle consistently points north. The round face is in texturized metal. This is framed by vertical metal banding which is gold plated gilt inside and polished steel outside.

The compass is stable on a tripod of solid brass legs. These 3 legs are bound together with a decorative brass central detail. Each leg finishes at the floor with a brass ball. The legs can be unscrewed from the top if necessary.

This table is in very good condition. The brass on the legs has a great antique patina adding character. The steel metal round frame has a nice patina in line with the age. The dial inside is in very good condition with only tiny patina in one side.

Packing is offered free of charge. The glass top would be wrapped in both bubble wrap & card and the frame bubble wrapped with a top layer of stretch-wrap for safe transport. If necessary the legs legs can be unscrewed and this piece could be boxed.
