Inspired by exotic cultures such as African figures, Pre-Columbian and Oriental forms, Rebajes created one of his most famous early designs this ‘Ubangi’ head.
Rebajes first objects, cut from cans and sold in the streets, were bought by the locals of Greenwich Village. This hand made approach was maintained through the years.
In 1934, Rebajes opened his first shop selling jewellery and objets d’art. Within 10 years he owned a factory and several New York shops of which the most famous was on Fifth Avenue (left).
Rebajes ran the business until 1967, when he returned to Spain where he continued to make jewellery until the late 80`s.
While Rebajes worked with a range of materials, he is best known for his work in copper, which predominated during the 40`s & 50’s.
These unusual die-cut and embossed pieces display influences from Picasso, Frank Lloyd Wright, Man Ray and Surrealism.
The pin to the left consists of male & female Brazilian masks which was another popular them.
In addition to the exotic, collectors love the Rebajes stamp with it`s characteristic Deco font which has remained the same through the years.
