Framed vintage etching & screenprint `Tretire`,1976, by Frank Auerbach, England. Number 1/30.
Signed and dated by the artist in pencil. Printed by white ink from one screen and one copper plate. Very good condition.
Landscape
has been a major theme in
Auerbach`s
paintings, however much rarer in his prints. This is only one of two landscapes. The subject is a tree in Herefordshire, seen from above out of an upstairs window. Initially Auerbach attempted to etch the plate at the printers from his drawings. This however didn’t work so he took the plates to the country and etched the scene directly in situ.
‘Avoiding any formula for trees, he caught the amorphous instability of the vast masses of foliage, seen from a position which masked their supporting anatomy, with a series of broad, swaying, multivalent shapes, marked out in screenprinted lines across the finer grained etching’ - Michael Podro, 1990.
Frank Auerbach was born in Germany in 1931 and moved to England in 1939.
He first studied under David Bomber, adapting his mentor`s expressionist approach. Auerbach is known for his use of thick impasto, giving his paintings textural and sculptural qualities.
He presently lives in Camden Town around the corner from the Roomscape Showroom.
Dimensions with the frame: H: 58.5 cm, W: 74 cm
