Giovanni Schoeman sculpture of a Sunflower in cold-cast bronze, Brutalist style, 1970`s ca, English.
In this Brutalist sculpture Schoeman artistically layered bronze, copper and white metal to create depth. The Sunflower is deconstructed into core parts with severe geometric representation typical of Brutalist fashion of the period.
Looking in detail there are repeated icons, appropriate for a Sunflower, such as the sun and stars arranged in a sunburst pattern. The attention to detail and crisp finish are exemplary of Schoeman`s creative & technical ability. Made from `Cold Cast Metal`, a technique developed in the 1960`s where metal powder is set within a resin binder.
After the casting this piece was signed by Giovanni below the lower left leaf. Framed on the original Hessian background with a brass plated metal frame. The frame can be fitted to the wall by two hooks at the back. The sculpture is in perfect condition. The Hessian has some patina and the brass frame has some flaking to the finish in line with age.
Another Schoeman sculpture of the period appeared in the first series of the TV programme Mad Men as photographed.
