HAR jewellery (also spelt jewelry) from the 1950’s is mysterious both in design and history.
HAR was part of Hargo Creations from New York. Joseph Heibronner was born in Munich in 1893 and married American Edith Levitt. In 1955, three years after their marriage, they founded HAR. The company produced for only 12 short years which means vintage finds are extremely rare.
The 1959 dragon series with it’s mystical and magical fantasy is completely original. In addition the pieces are made with fine metalwork and include stones called lava rocks and aurora borealis which enhanced the exotic nature of their highly sculptural creations.
Based in New York’s Chinatown it is fitting that in 1960 HAR produced the laughing Chinaman series. Intricate carved faces of imitation ivory faces and detailed bodies with quality enamelling and a characteristic antiquing effect. These come in brooches, bracelets, earrings and necklaces making up sets like this which HAR is also know for.
HAR jewellery were featured in the famous 1992 “Jewels of Fantasy” exhibit at the Victoria and albert Museum.
It is believed the company became part of ART another costume jewellery company. There is certainly a remarkable resemblance in the way pieces by ART were crafted so this is very possible.
