John Chamberlain Artist (1927-2011)

Added 01 July 2013 at 17:25

John Chamberlain Artist was an American sculptor who experimented with many techniques & materials over his half-century career as an artist.

In 1957 he took the initiative to re-use old automobiles into sculptures. In doing this he brought colour & collage to sculpture never seen before.

Chamberlain’s work effortlessly bridges the major movements of the 50s, 60s & 70s.  His sculptures are the tridimensional equivalent of 50’s abstract expressionism. Choosing cars as his material, chimes with Pop Art’s focus on consumer items. Like a ‘process-based’ artist of the late 60’s, Chamberlain hammers & crushes his metal into a sort of graffiti monument.

Initially a painter, Chamberlain returned to his roots during different creative phases of his career. In  the ‘Natural Landscape’ series of prints from the 1980’s, Chamberlain was inspired by his sculptures of car parts. Rooms cape has sourced a complete original series for sale as a set or separately.

In the late 60s, Chamberlain experimented with sculptures out of urethane foam, some of which took the form of sofas. His limited edition sofas (left), produced for Daedalus Concepts, and are highly sought after.

In his career Chamberlain had over 100 solo shows, traveling exhibitions, and retrospectives. His work is represented in all the great galleries and museums including The Tate, Guggenheim and the Museum of Modern Art. In 2011, one of his metal sculptures sold for nearly $5 million.

Chamberlain once said "I think of my art materials not as junk but as garbage. Manure, actually: it goes from being the waste material of one being to the life-source of another."
