Neo-Brutalism

Added 22 April 2013 at 19:09

Brown, mirrors & nature were the essentials of 70’s interiors. Egalitarian, rugged & masculine, Brutalism was a reaction to the colourful 1950’s.

As the 70’s went on, mirrors dominated over the brown.  Mirrors complimented the geometric forms of Brutalism and reflected nature into buildings.

Contemporary industrial and urban spaces are rediscovering Brutalism. With space at a premium, the devil is in the detail to maximise the visual effect. One key geometric piece says it all like this Brutalist sculptured vintage nest of tables by belgian artist Juliette Belarti.

Nature inspired monotones and light touches, give shapes texture and character as Brutalism had intended. The Muller & Zimmer vintage crystal ceiling light at the bottom of the page appears to have been gently shaped by nature.

Vintage Sciolari chandeliers bring a romantic and unique feeling to minimal modern interiors.  Italian based Sciolari 60`s & 70`s lighting added much needed glamour to Brutalism. Building on great design & craftmanship, Sciolari introduced geometric compositions, honest materials, warm golden metals and crystal, as in Roomscape`s new finds this month: a tubular chrome, brushed steel & glass large chandelier  and a gold metal & crystal rods chandelier.

Today it is about a cutting edge industrial space with an eclectic flair.
