Pair antique Rococo style table lamps, acanthus & acorn leaf decoration in gilt bronze,1920`s ca, French.

This pair of antique lamps have been gently cleaned while respecting the aged patina. They are newly rewired, earthed, PAT tested by an electrician and ready to use. Each has the following new components: lamp holder with a cream card cover, gold silk cable, white cord switch, white plug (UK Plug up to 250V) and clip-on pleated cream silk lampshade. These lamps can be used with a dimmer. It is possible to use these lights in other countries with a light bulb suitable to local electricity.

Presented here is a decorative pair of early 20th Century French candlestick lamps in the Rococo style. The organic form & elegant proportions make these lamps well sized for the bedside or corridor. They would suit a range of interiors such as Antique, Arts & Crafts, Traditional, Hollywood Regency or Contemporary.

The design consists of gilt bronze candlesticks with a scrolling pattern and an exuberant acanthus leaf & acorn decoration, resulting in great movement. The acanthus leaf has been used throughout history as architectural and design features. It is a perennial and has been symbolic of longevity. The acorn is considered to be an emblem of good luck, prosperity, youthfulness and power.

Both lamps started as a pair, but are individually quality cast with great attention to detail, resulting in slight variations in design & proportions, although both lamps have been rewired to the same candle tube height. The foliate scrolling motif starts in the square bases from where the column swirls leading to the light, with leaf bobeche drip pan and leaf bulbous candle sconce. The lamp holder is new and covered by a new cream card candle tube.

Each lamp carries 1 standard small screw light bulb (E14) up to 40 Watts. At present they are fitted & photographed with Candle Clear shaped light bulbs of 25 Watts. These are included in the price.

Each lamp is finished with a new clip-on cream silk candle lampshade. The shade is tapered and has wide pleat detailing, complete with a crepe trim top and bottom. It is lined in the same colour which enhances the glow of light.

These antique lamps are in very good condition. The frames are sound with tiny superficial marks & minor rubbing to the gilt in line with age & wear. The original antique patina has been preserved, adding character & depth. The 2 lampshades are new and in very good condition.

FRENCH ROCOCO STYLE HISTORY

"Rococo," comes from the French word "rocaille" for rock and shell garden ornamentation. First appearing in the decorative arts, the Rococo style emphasized sinuous curves, and patterns based on flowers, vines, and shells. It is an exceptionally ornamental and theatrical style of architecture, art and decoration which combines asymmetry, scrolling curves, gilding, white and pastel colours, sculpted moulding, and trompe-l`oeil frescoes to create surprise and the illusion of motion and drama. It is often described as the final expression of the Baroque movement, beginning in France in the 1730`s as a reaction against the more formal and geometric Louis XIV style.
