sculpture with an L shaped plinth. They have a good weight and each solid brass figure is individually quality cast.
Historically in British heraldry, the lion is a symbol of
strength,
nobility, dignity,
courage, resistance and stateliness.
The Lion`s head door knocker with it`s mouth gripping the ring became very popular in the early 19th Century.
The L shaped bases are in solid wood, covered in leather, in a shade of brown/terracotta colour. The bottom sides are also covered in leather to protect the surfaces below. The leather sides are decorated with stamped straight lines following the edges plus brass pins.
The lion`s head is fitted on the vertical portion of the base. Each sculpture made of an antique Victorian door knocker. The lion holds the striker between his teeth, which rotates up & down. A decorative brass washer fitted on the horizontal portion locks the striker in place.
These bookends sell together and the price is for the pair. The books are for display only and not included in the sale.
Both vintage bookends are in very good condition for its age. The original vintage patina has been preserved. The brass sculptures are in very good condition, with the original warm antique patina present adding character. The bases are both sound, the leather surfaces in good condition with an attractive warm patina and minor marks, tiny loses & rubbing in line with age & wear.

THE LION HEAD AS HISTORIC SYMBOL IN ENGLAND
Historically, the earliest door knockers were made from cast iron. It wasn’t until the Georgian Period that brass took over.
The English have a particular fondness for the Lion Head door knocker.
The lion has been used as symbol of Great Britain signifying strength, pride, dignity, security and power. A Lion`s head door knocker acts as a guardian to the home. During the Victorian Period, the door knocker became a statement of wealth and decadence.
The lion has been used as a patriotic symbol in England for many years to the present day.
The brass lion head door knocker was chosen as the number 10 Downing Street door knocker.
