Punch and Judy brass nutcracker, 1920`s, English.

Thoroughly cleaned respecting the antique patina and ready to use.

This antique nutcracker is well cast in solid brass. In the comical theme of `Punch & Judy` makes this nutcracker unique to add to a collection, or as a very personal gift.

There is great attention to detail in the casting such as both figures and the pivotal screw.  It also has a good weight. Together these are signs of quality & craftsmanship.

It is in very good condition with the original antique patina adding character. As a cracher it functions well.

Gift box included.

Punch and Judy History

Punch and Judy are traditional British puppet show characters, with roots in the 16th-century Italian masked `Commedia dell `Arte`. Punch is an anglicized version of the Italian name Pulcinella; the character known for his long nose, squeaky nasal voice and his wooden spoon. The first mention in British Literature of a Punch puppet show is in the late 17th Century. During the 18th Century, Punch and Judy shows became an established popular entertainment, performed with hand puppets in mobile puppet stages set up on street corners. Originally intended for adults, by the late Victorian Era, they were primarily performed for children.
